The court here will not wave the $299 filing fee until after the bankruptcy and the trustee decides if you qualify for a refund. I have to pay it up front. My attorney is charging $500 but her fee has been worth a lot. Louisiana's laws are more complex than most other states and you have to account for everything you own here. There is no blanket amount for personal belongings. There are exempt and non-exempt items and you have to know which are which or the sheriff will be out to collect the non-exempt items if you own too many or if they suspect you own more than you are declaring. All bankruptcies are audited by the feds, so it's vital to get the legal stuff right. An honest mistake nowadays can land you in federal prison. If you filed yourself and didn't get everything right, the court here doesn't consider that a valid reason not to lock you up. They will tell you that you should have hired an attorney. That's why I hired an attorney. It may be different in your state.

KD, I know that I can file on my own, but each state’s laws are a little different and using an attorney in Louisiana is necessary. I haven't been doing it this was for anywhere near as long as you have, and found your site interesting, though I do have a question about something... Why are you using an attorney to file bankruptcy? This is something you can do on your own, fairly easily, and will save you money. Attorneys are an expensive option for this; I bet your attorney never mentioned that you can apply to the bankruptcy court to waive the filing fee, either did he?

I am doing something similar to your idea here of using my blog to get out of debt, etc., when I came across this site.
