This is a good illustration of how non-trivial the decision to file bankruptcy is. It requires a thorough review of your financial situation, both current and future, and should not be attempted by the weak-hearted. Certainly, as the poster indicates, having a qualified attorney can make things go more smoothly and keep you out of hot water.

@Maria - Thanks, it is an onerous process and I don't recommend it unless you're at the end of your rope, which I am, unfortunately. Honesty with the attorney general's office is the only policy unless you really like to live in a 6x8 ft space for several years and come out with a felony conviction!

I've written in previous posts that it would take either 10 or more years to pay off the debt at an income that would be reasonable for Louisiana, or I'd have to make a boat-load of money over the next 5 years to pay it off. Not contributing to retirement savings for 5 years is a bad idea even now because I'm 47. My retirement age is 67. I've got to put this debt behind me, start over and get on with my life.

@Lori - thank you so much for your vote of confidence! I need all the encouragement I can get right now.
